We have Club on Mondays starting the first Monday after Labor Day.  So, on the Sunday after Labor Day (the day before our first Club), we have our annual tradition of T-Shirts & Popsicles.

We do a simple shirt design trying to keep the cost below $7 and we charge $10 for them.

On the day of the event, we get a bunch of popsicles and some white car window paint.

The event takes place at our high school football stadium parking lot.  We set up shop so that kids can drive up, hold out the money out their window, and yell out their size & the popsicle flavor they’d like.  We have one leader throw the shirts in, one leader hand them their popsicles, and a couple leaders & kids write “Young Life Tonight” on the cars.

Usually, lots of our kids stay in the parking lot and spend time writing more on their cars as we hang out together.  In all, we usually are there for only 30 – 45 minutes.

The next day at school there are about 100 kids wearing Young Life shirts and dozens of cars in the parking lot advertising for Club.  And, we’ve made $300 that we use for Club expenses.

Do The Same Thing For Camp

We’ve done the same-type thing for camp.  Some years it works well and some years it doesn’t, depending on the number of kids who are pumped to go to summer camp.

If we feel like we have a large enough group that will be excited to be the first to turn in their money, we’ll publicize a “first day to turn in your deposit” event, similar to the T-shirts & Popsicles, where kids can drive up, turn in their form & deposit, and get some sort of something or other.  One year, we had nearly all our camp spots full by the end of January because we got so much momentum toward this event.

From my experience as a youth director, public school teacher, Young Life leader, and father, I’ve learned a few things about what it takes to be a good parent. These 5 things aren’t all it takes, but for me they are a good starting point.

Below my video is the commentary I mention in the video. It’s an hour long, but definitely worth watching. It is only going to be available online until September 2011.

Below is the video they thought was so awesome, because she couldn’t understand how Jesus could learn about himself. To them, that was an example of Jesus not being God. To me it’s an example of a human being wanting to learn more about how God could be a human – something none of us can truly comprehend, but that’s true nonetheless. For the record, when I say to her that Jesus read the Bible, I didn’t literally mean the Bible, but the Hebrew scriptures that Jesus would have had.

This is a repost of two of our most popular Leader Lounge podcasts that I thought might be helpful as we all head into the camping season.

Part 1 Direct Download – Episode 3
Part 2 Direct Download – Episode 4

You can subscribe to the podcast in iTunes.  We are hopefully going to be recording several over the summer.  Time just seems to get away from us.

For more summer camp ideas, make sure to check out The Young Life Leader Blog as well as Help For Young Life Leaders Now.  They have both posted some excellent content including one post for us older leaders and one about leaving family at home while you go off to camp.

These two videos are priceless. The first video shows a manly man, a guy who exhibits both athletic prowess and a strong sense of the protective instincts of fatherhood. And then, there’s the weenie, a guy who shows neither athletic ability nor any fatherly inclination whatsoever. So embarrassing.

And now the weenie, a guy who shows neither athletic ability nor any fatherly inclination whatsoever. Dude, that’s embarrassing.
