I might be wrong, but I don’t think so.  Jesus tells us the greatest commandment is to love God and the second is like it;  to love our neighbors.  To me, that means life is 100% about relationships.

If that’s what life is about, then I also believe God has put himself and other people on our hearts.  Our sinfulness – looking out only for ourselves – is what causes us to not realize that.  (Romans 1:18-19) But, when we are in a relationship with Christ, the Holy Spirit helps us recognize a calling to love our neighbors.

To whom does your calling lead you?  For instance, I feel a strong calling to love teenagers & share Christ with them.  You might feel the same type of calling to prisoners, homeless folks, people with special needs, little children, etc.  The list is endless.  That’s why there are so many different types of ministries out there.

But, why are there so few workers?  Why do churches and ministries always seem to be looking for more people to help out?  What if everyone who felt an inkling of a calling to love someone outside their home would get off their butt and go?  Go be with those people.  Can you imagine?

In Young Life we have a saying – We Go Where Kids Are.  That’s what Jesus did, so that’s what we do.  Who are you called to be with?  Are you genuinely with them?  Do you get up and go where they are?  Do they know you personally  or do you just throw money in their direction?

I’m not saying we shouldn’t give, but relationships are more important and have a greater impact than money.  So, get out there & serve.  You won’t regret it.

I am terrible at remembering names.  Actually, I think I’m probably pretty good at remembering names, its the faces I have a problem with.  There are tons of names in my head, I just have a difficult time matching those names to each particular face, which is really the most important part of remembering the names.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve either called a kid the wrong name, forgotten that I’ve met the kid, or worse yet, been called out by a kid I call “Hey Dude” when he asks me if I know his name.  That’s a terrible feeling – for both of us. Continue reading »
